- "I, Tywin Lannister, led the assault on Castamere to put down this rebellion."
- ―Tywin Lannister
Castamere was a castle in the Westerlands and the seat of House Reyne, a vassal house holding fealty to House Lannister of Casterly Rock.
History
Castamere was destroyed by Lord Tywin Lannister when House Reyne rose in rebellion against him. Although the castle was destroyed; it is immortalized in the song "The Rains of Castamere." By the end of the rebellion, Castamere had been put to the torch and all members of House Reyne executed.
Season 3
Queen Cersei tells Margaery Tyrell about the destruction of Castamere and House Reyne in order to intimidate her. She implies that if House Tyrell ever rebels against House Lannister, they will suffer a similar fate.[1]
In the books
In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, Castamere is located near Tarbeck Hall, seat of House Tarbeck, and the Crag, seat of House Westerling. It is rich in gold mines, which were captured by Greatjon Umber following the Battle of Oxcross. Following the Red Wedding, Castamere is awarded to House Spicer, the maternal family of Robb Stark's Queen, Jeyne Westerling, for their part in the fall of the King in the North.
