Behind the scenes
Staff writer Bryan Cogman came up with the idea of the stillborn fetuses being preserved in jars. Cogman said in an interview, "It was a proud day for me as a writer when I walked on set and saw those magnificently nasty prop dead babies floating in those jars."
In the books
In the A Song of Ice and Fire book series, there is no mention Selyse Baratheon having any stillborn sons.
However, there is a character named Edric Storm who is the bastard son of Robert Baratheon and Selyse's cousin Delena Florent. He is a sturdily attractive youth, with coal-black hair and deep blue eyes. He is said to be "the very image" of his father, although he also has the large ears common to House Florent.
He was conceived on Stannis and Selyse's wedding night, in the couple's own wedding bed. Stannis saw this as a blight upon his honor, so he sent him to Storm's End, to his other uncle, Lord Renly Baratheon. As Delena was nobly born, Edric Storm was acknowledged by his father. He was reared in relative comfort at Storm's End under the guardianship of Ser Cortnay Penrose, Lord Renly's castellan, who was very fond of him. After Renly's death, Stannis shipped Edric to Dragonstone, where he spends his time taking lessons and plays in Aegon's Garden with Shireen Baratheon.
Stannis never forgave Robert for the insult, although Robert swore that he was drunk and had no intention to humiliate Stannis. Edric's presence alone in Dragonstone is a constant reminder to Stannis for that unpleasant event, and he holds a grudge against his bastard nephew (somewhat similarly to Catelyn Stark's feelings to Jon Snow). On the other hand, Stannis is aware that Edric is not responsible to his father's shameful deeds, that they are relatives, and he has no objection that Edric spends time with his daughter.
Edric was sent a gift allegedly from his father (actually from Varys) every year on his nameday, a pony one year, a sable cloak the next, once even a miniature warhammer similar to the one his father used. Edric would then write to King's Landing to thank his father for the gifts, at which point Robert would laugh and ask Varys what was sent.
When Davos returned to Dragonstone, he met Edric, and marvelled how much he resembled Robert: the boy had the prominent ears of a Florent, but the hair, eyes, jaw and cheekbones were all Baratheon.
After Davos was released from jail, Stannis mentioned offhandedly that Edric had a fever, and Maester Pylos was has been leeching him. The leeches which carried Edric's blood were used in the ritual performed by Melisandre. In the show, it was Gendry's blood that was used in the ritual.
