The season was filmed in the Paint Hall studio in Belfast and on location in Northern Ireland, Croatia and Iceland. Several new characters have been announced for the second season. The core of the crew making the series remains the same.

The Battle of the Blackwater–
is the largest battle in the War of the Five Kings to date. It is depicted in full in the episode "Blackwater." The battle was an attempt by Stannis Baratheon to take King's Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms, and to seize the Iron Throne from Joffrey Baratheon.

Flatlands

Dothraki–
are organized in nameless clans known as khalasars, led by a single leader, the khal. The khalasars inhabit the Dothraki sea, and cross it to raid neighboring regions, such as Lhazar to the southeast or the Free Cities to the west. The Dothraki respect force and live by taking what they need including supplies, slaves and valuables. There is no Dothraki word for thank you and they view trade as an exchange of gifts.

Dragonglass–
is a common name in Westeros for the substance known as obsidian, a form of volcanic glass. Grenn, Dolorous Edd and Samwell Tarly find a cache of dragonglass daggers buried on the Fist of the First Men. Sam identifies the material, but is unsure why it would have been left on the Fist by a ranger of the Night's Watch.

The Hand of the King–
is the most powerful appointed position in the Seven Kingdoms, second only to the King on the Iron Throne in authority and responsibility. The Hand is the King's closest adviser, appointed and authorized to take decisions in the King's name. The Hand of the King is the highest ranking member of the small council, and leads meetings of the council as proxy for the king when the monarch is absent. Who is the current holder? Drogo–
is a khal or warlord of the Dothraki, the famed nomadic horse-lords of the eastern continent beyond the Narrow Sea. The Dothraki are fierce warriors, skilled in battle, unrelenting in combat and known for savagery towards non-Dothraki. Amongst their own people they have a code of honor, albeit still a harsh and unforgiving one. Drogo was very young to have his own khalasar, particularly such a large one. He is a legendary warrior and has never been defeated in battle.

The Faceless Men–
are an organization based in the Free City of Braavos, though their members range far and wide across both Essos and Westeros. They are reportedly a guild of assassins who command exorbitant fees, but have a reputation for competence that is unmatched by any comparable organization. The Faceless Men possess the ability to physically change their faces, shapeshifting so that they appear as an entirely new person.

Osha–
is a recurring character in the first and second seasons. She is played by guest star Natalia Tena and debuts in "A Golden Crown." Osha is a woman of the Free Folk, now in service to House Stark at Winterfell. Osha is a wildling, one of the "Free Folk" who live north of the Wall. She worships the Old Gods of the Forest and is knowledgeable about the mythical creatures found in the far north. Osha joins Stiv and Wallen to form a band of wildlings.

Giant Season 3 ep 1

Giants–
are a non-human race considered to be legendary by the inhabitants of the Seven Kingdoms south of the Wall. However, giants do actually exist in the furthest north Beyond the Wall. This is in contrast with both the Children of the Forest and the White Walkers, which even the wildlings claim to have not seen in thousands of years. According to legend, Bran the Builder enlisted the aid of giants to raise the Wall. The Free Folk believe he used magic to enslave them.

Red Wedding–
The Red Wedding is a massacre during the War of the Five Kings arranged by Lord Walder Frey as revenge against King Robb Stark for breaking the marriage pact between House Stark and House Frey. During the massacre, King Robb, his wife, Queen Talisa, his mother, Lady Catelyn, and most of his bannermen and men-at-arms are murdered following the marriage feast and bedding of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey.

Tommen Baratheon–
Tommen Baratheon is a recurring character in the first, second, fourth and fifth seasons. Following Joffrey's death at his wedding feast, Tommen is crowned King. His formal style is Tommen of the House Baratheon, First of His Name, King of the Andals and the First Men and Lord of the Seven Kingdoms. As he is not old enough to rule in his own right and command the military forces of the Seven Kingdoms, he does not yet bear the title of Protector of the Realm.

Sand Snakes–
The Sand Snakes are the eight bastard daughters of Prince Oberyn Martell. Although noble-born bastards are often ignored by their parents, Oberyn has acknowledged all his daughters and has loving relationships with each of them. They are all loyal members of House Martell. Their nickname comes from the bastard surname used for noble bastards in Dorne and the nickname of their father, the "Red Viper".

Mutiny at Castle Black–
The Mutiny at Castle Black is an event that occurs during the conflict beyond the Wall, in which numerous brothers of the Night's Watch mutiny against their Lord Commander, Jon Snow. Following the Battle of Castle Black, Jon Snow is elected the new Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Having spent time with the Wildlings as part of an intelligence mission, Jon grows to sympathize with the wildlings and realizes that since both the Night's Watch and the wildlings are Northerners descended from the First Men.

Assassinations at the Twins–
The Assassinations at the Twins is an event late in the War of the Five Kings where Lord Walder Frey, the Lord of the Crossing, Lord of Riverrun, and Lord Paramount of the Trident, as well as his sons "Lame Lothar" Frey and "Black Walder" Rivers, are murdered by Arya Stark, who was previously believed to be dead. The death of these three individuals avenges the Red Wedding for the Stark family."The Winds of Winter" Although the assassinations of Black Walder and Lothar are not shown onscreen, the death of Lord Walder is depicted in the episode "The Winds of Winter".

Execution of Eddard Stark–
The Execution of Eddard Stark is a pivotal event in the nascent conflict caused by the death of Robert Baratheon, paving the way for its transformation into a full-fledged civil war. The execution of Ned Stark was largely condemned by many major houses throughout the seven kingdoms on both sides of the war. Tywin Lannister refered to the action as "madness and stupidity", as it shattered the plans of House Lannister to make peace with House Stark and House Tully, allowing them to deal with both Renly and Stannis Baratheon. Tyrion Lannister laments that the execution "will haunt our family for a generation.

Sack of Highgarden–
The Sack of Highgarden is an engagement during Daenerys Targaryen's invasion of Westeros. With the backing of House Tarly, bannermen of House Tyrell, Ser Jaime Lannister leads a Lannister host to the Reach, the region ruled by the Tyrells, and sacks their seat of power, Highgarden. The Tyrells of Highgarden and Lannisters of Casterly Rock were previously allies in the War of the Five Kings, though Cersei Lannister saw them as rivals, in particular Margaery Tyrell, to influence over the Iron Throne, which was then still controlled by the Baratheon dynasty.

Dragonpit Summit– The Dragonpit Summit was a parley of the major monarchs of Westeros in King's Landing to discuss the future of the Seven Kingdoms after Daenerys Targaryen's war for Westeros comes to a stalemate and an armistice proposed by Lord Tyrion Lannister is agreed upon. In the past, "Great Councils" have been convened to discuss the future of the realm when the line of succession of the monarchy and inheritance of the Iron Throne is unclear.

Harrenhal Great Hall

The Great Council of 101 AC was convened to determine the heir to the Iron Throne in the final years of old King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, grandson of Aegon the Conqueror. Jaehaerys outlived both of his sons, leading to a succession crisis. To avoid a civil war, an unprecedented council was held at Harrenhal in which every lord of Westeros, great or small, convened to decide the succession between Jaehaerys's grandchildren.

Vhagar kills Arrax

The Dance of the Dragons is a civil war in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros fought between rival branches of House Targaryen. The war of succession emerged between the children of the late Viserys I Targaryen: his eldest daughter, Rhaenyra, and his eldest son, Aegon II, over who should succeed their father on the Iron Throne. It is the first full-scale civil war to ever take place in the Seven Kingdoms.
