The latest vandal attack has led me to think that we should do as other wikias and raise the protection level so only registered users can perform edits. It will reduce vandalism and attract more committed editors.--Gonzalo84 07:19, May 26, 2012 (UTC)

Agreed, it's a very good idea. I know people that will do such things. They're are bored.--Mesmermann 08:36, May 26, 2012 (UTC)
I am mildly opposed to this as it goes against the spirit of Wikis (allowing anyone to edit at any time). Simultaneously, I'm tired of dealing with the vandalism issue and it's relatively easy to register a name or log in using social media sites. I am very open to persuasion on this issue. Can you guys provide examples of other Wikias which have done this successfully?--Werthead 12:47, May 30, 2012 (UTC)
My initial reaction was the same. I like that we can say on our main page that we are an encyclopedia that anyone can edit. However, we can still say that even if we are making everyone register. Our level of useful anonymous contributions is exceeded by our level of anonymous vandals and those with dynamic IP addresses are especially troublesome. I believe Gonzalo84 is an admin on the Buffyverse wikia which has implemented this. I will let them say more.--Opark 77 12:50, May 30, 2012 (UTC)
At the Buffyverse Wiki we implemented the measure and vandalism is practically nonexistant. I think Lostpedia, or the Lost Wikia - which are two different projects - set the example. They also apply it at AWoIaF. About the usefulness of anon contribs, I say the raising of protection level will make those interested register, its easy and quick and we can keep better track of their contribs. Last friday we had over one hundred vandal articles created and I blocked each and every one of the IP's, took me a long time and nearly got late to a date. We are a new wiki about one of the most popular tv shows in history and that will make us a constant target for a long time. --Gonzalo84 15:41, May 30, 2012 (UTC)
Okay, in that case I have no objection. I believe this isn't something admins can do, we need to contact Wikia to get them to do it?--Werthead 19:39, May 30, 2012 (UTC)
I have contacted Wikia to see what the procedure is. Based on other Wikis we may need to hold a formal poll first.--Werthead 19:50, May 30, 2012 (UTC)
Wikia says no, basically. Or rather, our vandalism/spam problem would have to be much bigger than it is now for them to consider it. We have to keep an eye on the situation and get back to them if the vandalism continues. Maybe make a log of it somewhere, such as on this page?--Werthead 02:08, May 31, 2012 (UTC)
We always block vandals and spammers right? So the block log is therefore a log of instances of vandalism and spam.--Opark 77 07:24, May 31, 2012 (UTC)

I agree with this decision. Keeping anonymous edits was useful in season 1 when we needed to get the ball rolling. We've got enough of a support base now. I should know, I added a ton of anonymous edits in season 1 to "Westeros", "Direwolves", etc. But its time to separate the wheat from the chaff. ***Just so long as actually registering a username is automatic and easy. Thus simply registering a username to edit won't deter anyone from editing (as opposed to certain wikis which actually require a permission-based vetting process...that's to extreme). --The Dragon Demands 02:53, June 1, 2012 (UTC)

Personally, I don't have any problem with going no-anon. I agree that it's good to allow them when starting out, but at this point Things are humming along quite nicely. Anyone who has anything useful to add, will have the motivation to register.

Rampant vandalism has been occurring since the season 2 finale aired, carried out by anonymous editors:

In soothing them, we nourish 'gainst our senate
The cockle of rebellion, insolence, sedition,
which we ourselves have plough'd for, sow'd,
and scatter'd,
By mingling them with us, the honour'd number,
Who lack not virtue, no, nor power, but that
which they have given to beggars!

I have preemptively locked down "Valar Morghulis" so only registered users can edit it. It will last for one day.--Gonzalo84 04:34, June 4, 2012 (UTC)
