The ancient Valyrians first found the dragons in the Fourteen Fires.
The Fourteen Fires was a chain of volcanoes located in the Valyrian peninsula, in the continent of Essos. It was in this location where Valyrians, then a community of shepherds, discovered dragons.[1]
The Fourteen Fires were destroyed during the Doom of Valyria.
