Gared is a character in Game of Thrones. He appears in the first episode of the series. In the unaired pilot he was played by Richard Ridings, but in the series itself Ridings was replaced by Dermot Keaney.
Gared was a ranger of the Night's Watch. He was an older, more experienced ranger and a capable soldier. He was beheaded by the White Walkers whilst on a scouting mission beyond the Wall in the Haunted Forest with Will and Ser Waymar Royce.
In the books
In the Song of Ice and Fire novels, Gared is past fifty and has lost both ears, his little finger and three toes to frostbite. He has been on the Wall for over forty years.
In the TV series, some of Gared and Will's story roles have been switched around from the books.
