In the ''[[Song of Ice and Fire]]'' novels, The House of the Undying is decribed as a grey, ancient ruin. It is long and low, with no towers or windows. It is coiled like a stone serpent through a grove of black-barked trees with inky blue leaves which are used to make the drink that the Qartheen call [[Shade of the evening]]. Daenerys has not come to find her dragons (in the books, they are never stolen). She has been unsuccessful at finding aid for her quest to take Westeros in Qarth. Pyat Pree tells her that the Warlocks can see the future and can show her many things that will help her. She drinks a cup of shade of the evening and enters on her own, leaving her people at the entrance. She travels down endless hallways and up many floors (which is strange as from the outside it's only a one story structure). She sees many visions in the rooms she looks into visions of her past and her future. She even sees Rhaegar Targaryen. Eventually, she reaches the room of Undying Warlocks. They are barely alive and like in the show seek to hold her there. She has only brought Drogon with her and he manages to wake her out of her trance and set fire to the place. She escapes to find a furious Pyat Pree who vows revenge on her. He does not die and his character goes on in the books.

"Is this a riddle?"
Daenerys Targaryen[src]

The House of the Undying is a location in Qarth. It is the gathering place for the Warlocks of Qarth.

Daenerys, Ser Jorah Mormont and Kovarro reach the House of the Undying. While trying to figure out the maze inside, Jorah loses sight of Dany. She enters inside the house and with a flamed torch begins her journey to locate her dragons. She sees various illusions along the way. She finds herself in the Great Hall (Red Keep) and sees the Iron Throne and the charred remains of the Red Keep, covered in snow. She next is seen leaving the Wall in a snowy storm. She next enters a tent where she sees her beloved Drogo and her son Rhaego. She knows it is merely an illusion and the cries of her dragons reminds her that she must force herself to continue on. She finds her dragons chained, and soon Pyat Pree chains Daenerys up as well. The warlock states that he intends to keep her prisoner. Pree had neglected to muzzle the dragons however, enabling Daenerys to order her dragons to incinerate Pree. The ensuing conflagration seems to have destroyed the House of the Undying.[1]
