Eddard Stark and his Valyrian steel greatsword, Ice.
Ice is a Valyrian steel greatsword, an heirloom of House Stark. It is used both in war and on ceremonial occasions by the Lord of House Stark.
History
Season 1
Eddard Stark uses Ice to behead Will, a deserter from the Night's Watch. Theon Greyjoy holds the scabbard, as Eddard draws the blade. He holds the sword before him as he pronounces the sentence.[1]
Ser Ilyn Payne, the King's executioner, draws his sword and walks toward a kneeling Lord Eddard Stark to execute him, on the orders of King Joffrey Baratheon. Arya Stark watching realizes to her horror that the sword he is to use is Ice the ancestral sword of House Stark.[2]
In the books
In A Song of Ice and Fire, Ice is a huge and impressive weapon forged out of Valyrian steel and has been in the family's possession for over four centuries. As a Valyrian-forged weapon, it never needs sharpening. It is one of the most powerful and potent symbols of Stark power and is the House's greatest heirloom.
Ned uses Ice to execute the Night's Watch deserter Will.
