Kraznys mo Nakloz is a recurring character in the third season. He is a slave-trader in the city of Astapor, on the coast of Slaver's Bay, and one of the Good Masters, the ruling elite of the city. He is an immensely wealthy individual who has grown rich from the training and trading of the Unsullied warrior-eunuchs.

Kraznys mo Nakloz was a Good Master, one of the ruling elites of the city of Astapor, one of the three cities in Slaver's Bay. He was a slave trader and owned eight thousand Unsullied slaves. The Unsullied were elite warrior eunuchs who were bred and trained from childhood to fight. The Unsullied were renown throughout Essos for their discipline and tenacity in combat. From childhood, Unsullied trainees were castrated and were subjected to a ruthless regime of training and discipline. Under Kraznys and other Good Masters, the smallest infractions were punished by death, which contributed to the high rate of attrition among Unsullied trainees. As with many of his compatriots, Kraznys only spoke Low Valyrian and was not able to speak the Common Tongue of Westeros. Thus when dealing with foreign customers, Kraznys had to rely on a slave girl known as Missandei to serve as his translator.

When Daenerys Targaryen—the younger daughter of Aerys Targaryen and a claimant to the Iron Throne in Westeros—visited Astapor, Kraznys gave Targaryen and her bodyguard Ser Jorah Mormont a tour of the Unsullied barracks. These Unsullied had been standing for an entire day without being given food or water. He was escorted by Missandrei, who served as his translator. Dany was intending to raise an army to enable her to conquer Westeros. Kraznys and Missandrei explained that the Unsullied were trained to fight from the age of five and that only one in four recruits survives the training. To demonstrate that the Unsullied did not fear pain or death, he sliced off the nipple of one soldier in the presence of his prospective customers.

The soldier showed no sign of pain but instead thanked Kraznys for giving him the opportunity to serve him. Through Missandrei, Kraznys also elaborated that the Unsullied were trained to show no mercy or weakness by killing a newborn slave child in front of its mother at the end of their training. While Daenerys was horrified by the brutal training regime, she still asked how many Unsullied were available. In response, Kraznys told her that eight thousand soldiers were for sale and that she had until the next day to make a decision. Throughout the meeting, Kraznys insulted Daenerys, believing that she did not know Low Valyrian. Missandrei translated Kraznys insult-laden sentences into more respectable phrases.

Behind the scenes

Kraznys was first mentioned in relationship to the news of the casting of Missandei,^[1] and it was assumed he would appear. This was confirmed on 18 August 2012 when it was announced he would be played by Dan Hildebrand.^[2].

In the books

In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, Kraznys is one of the "Good Masters", the heads of the noble and wealthy slave-trading families, of the city of Astapor, dwelling in an immense pyramid. He has disdain and contempt for anyone not born of Ghiscari blood and considers his people and heritage to be superior to anyone else's, even that of Valyria (despite Valyria defeating Ghiscar in war five times before finally obliterating it with dragonfire). He is immensely greedy. He employs the Naathi slave Missandei as a translator. Unlike in the TV series, the books describe him as incredibly fat.
