In the books

In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, Masha Heddle is a middle-aged fat woman, whose teeth have been turned blood-red due to her addiction to sourleaf. She has run the Crossroads Inn for more than twenty years. Catelyn remembers those red teeth being terrifying to her when she was young. Rodrik is not sure if they should stop there, but Catelyn hasn't been home in so long she thinks it will be safe. They get the last room, the one under the loud bells that ring for meals. They are pretending to be a father and daughter.

When she is seeking allies, Catelyn asks the largest group of men in the room, a group of Frey men, after the health of Walder Frey, and is told that he is marrying again on the occassion of his ninetieth birthday. When Tryion laughs, she knows she has won.

Masha Heddle is upset by the arrest, and insists on no violence in the inn. This doesn't save her when the Lannister army takes the area. The next time Tyrion sees the place, Masha Heddle is hanging out front in a gibbet, as punishment for allowing Catelyn to kidnap Tyrion. Crows have eaten her face, so her red teeth are very prominent. As he goes past, Tyrion says that all he wanted was a room and some food.
