Meraxes was the dragon ridden by Rhaenys Targaryen during the War of Conquest.[1][2] Meraxes was said to be capable of swallowing an entire horse.[3]
In the books
George R.R. Martin has briefly mentioned that Rhaenys Targaryen "died in Dorne, with her dragon" - it is unclear if Rhaenys died due to violence, but this might possibly imply that the Dornish actually managed to kill Rhaenys, and that they killed Meraxes along with her. Dragons are powerful but they are not completely invincible, and can succumb to sustained arrow fire.[4]
