Old Nan is a character in Game of Thrones. She was played by Margaret John in the first season. Margaret John passed away on 2 February 2011, after the completion of filming for Season 1. The status of the character in the second season is not known.
Old Nan is an elderly woman living in Winterfell. She is a retired servant known for her tale-telling abilities.

She suggests telling him the story of Duncan the Tall , to which Bran replies that he hates her stories and prefers the scary ones. She then tells him about the long winter and a time when the white walkers ventured south.
In the books
Old Nan is the oldest person living at Winterfell. She is a former loyal servant and retainer who is effectively retired. However, she still tells stories and legends to the Stark children. She is the ancestor of the gentle, slow-witted Hodor, although the relationship between them is unclear.
