- "We're outlaws. Outlaws steal. You're lucky we didn't kill you."
- ―Anguy to Sandor Clegane
An outlaw is an individual that has defied the laws of the realm and the "King's peace" and are thus outside the protection of the law. A similar term, but with a more negative connotation, is brigand.
Outlaws tend to form bands or "brotherhoods" for protection and to avoid capture.
Known outlaws
- The Kingswood Brotherhood, led by Simon Toyne, based around the Kingswood. Now defunct.
- The Brotherhood Without Banners, led by Lord Beric Dondarrion and Thoros of Myr, based at Hollow Hill and active in the Riverlands. Formed from the survivors of the company sent by Eddard Stark to bring the King's justice to the then-attainted Ser Gregor Clegane.
- Sandor Clegane, who deserted his post at the Kingsguard, branded an outlaw following his attack against a group of "King's Men" - Lannister men-at-arms - led by Polliver.
