Peter Vaughan (born Peter Ewart Ohm; 4 April 1923 – 6 December 2016) was a British actor. He has appeared many times on screen and on stage since the 1950s, including a leading role alongside Frank Sinatra in The Naked Runner. He appeared in many British television series of the 1960s and 1970s, including Porridge, Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) and Citizen Smith. He also played the role of Denethor in the acclaimed 1981 BBC radio dramatization of The Lord of the Rings. More recent roles included a recurring stint on Lark Rise to Candleford.

In Game of Thrones Vaughan played Maester Aemon. He was confirmed in the role on 16 July 2010.

Vaughan was partially blind and portrayed the blind character, Aemon, in the show.

Peter Vaughan passed away on 6 December 2016 due to natural causes at the age of 93 - less than two years after his filming for Game of Thrones ended, when his character died within the story from old age.[1]
