In the books
In the Song of Ice and Fire novels, Podrick is a young member of a cadet branch of House Payne. His parents died when he was young, so he was raised by a relative, Ser Cedric Payne, as a squire. Ser Cedric was killed in battle, so Pod was taken up as a squire by Ser Lorimer, a hedge knight in Leo Lefford's service. When Ser Lorimer was hanged for stealing food from the baggage train, he spared because of his name and assigned to Tyrion Lannister as his squire. Tyrion believes Podrick was assigned to him as a jape. He is very awkward and is loyal to Tyrion, as seen when he ironed Tyrion's clothing.
Notably, Pod appears in the first Song of Ice and Fire novel, but his appearance in the TV show was delayed until the second season.
