Kingsguard

"Ser Preston will be stationed here beside the... primary entertainment."
―Ser Jaime Lannister[src]

Ser Preston Greenfield[b] was a knight and a member of the Queensguard, defending Queen Cersei Lannister as he defended King Robert Baratheon, King Joffrey Baratheon and King Tommen Baratheon before her.

Biography

Game of Thrones: Season 1

Ser Preston is among the guards that attacked Eddard, when he attempts to arrest Cersei, and take her children into his custody.[1]

Game of Thrones: Season 4

After Jaime returns to King's Landing, he goes over with Meryn Trant the placement of the Kingsguard members in defensive positions during Joffrey's wedding, assigning Ser Preston a place close to the wedding feast "primary entertainment".[2]

Game of Thrones: Season 5

Five members of the Kingsguard escort King Tommen to the steps before the Great Sept of Baelor so the king can meet with the High Sparrow. Members of the Faith Militant block them.[3]

Game of Thrones: Season 8

Ser Preston is presumably killed by the Hound or crushed by debris while protecting Cersei during the Battle of King's Landing, along with the other Kingsguard.[4]

In the books

In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, Greenfield is a member of Robert Baratheon's Kingsguard. He is noted as the shortest member of the Kingsguard. He accompanied Robert on his boar hunting trip where he was mortally wounded. He pledges allegiance to Joffrey following Robert's death.

Similarly to at least three other members of the Kingsguard (Jaime, Boros Blount and Arys Oakheart), Ser Preston used to violate his vow of celibacy at a certain draper's house whenever the draper was away.

Ser Preston is killed in the riots in King's Landing; he has been stabbed and hacked so cruelly that he was red-brown from head to heel.

Ser Preston is replaced by Ser Balon Swann, who has been mentioned in the series but not as part of the Kingsguard. In the series, no Kingsguard is shown to be killed by the rioters. Ser Preston is later mentioned as being alive at the time of Joffrey's wedding, meaning he survived the riots in TV continuity.

Notes

  1. In "Winter Is Coming," which takes place in 298 AC, Sansa Stark tells Cersei Lannister that she is 13 years old and Bran Stark tells Jaime Lannister that he is 10 years old. Arya Stark was born between Sansa and Bran, making her either 11 or 12 in Season 1. The rest of the Stark children have been aged up by 2 years from their book ages, so it can be assumed that she is 11 in Season 1. Arya is 18 in Season 8 according to HBO, which means at least 7 years occur in the span of the series; therefore, each season of Game of Thrones must roughly correspond to a year in-universe, placing the events of Season 8 in 305 AC.
  2. Conjecture based on information from A Song of Ice and Fire; may be subject to change.
