The Masters of Meereen, made aware of Daenerys Targaryen's Targaryen's host by the sack of Astapor and Yunkai scorched the fields surrounding Meereen prior to her arrival, this is to prevent a prolonged siege. Also prior to her arrival a slave child was nailed to a milepost marker with an arm pointing to Meereen.

In the books, it is Strong Belwas that defeated the champion of Meereen, Oznak Zo Pahl. Strong Belwas was the Unsullied bodyguard of Daenerys Targaryen.
