Storm King was the title held by the ruler of the Stormlands since the Age of Heroes until the Targaryen conquest of Westeros, after which the entire continent was unified under a single monarchy. The Storm Kings were one of the Great Houses.
The first Storm King, Durran, lived during the Age of Heroes and belonged to the First Men ethnic group. When the Andals invaded Westeros, they conquered the Stormlands but the title of "Storm King" remained.
During the War of Conquest the last Storm King, Argilac the Arrogant, was killed by Aegon I Targaryen's bastard half-brother Orys Baratheon, who went on to claim Argilac's seat at the castle Storm's End, his sigil, his words, and his daughter, founding House Baratheon. Thus all members of House Baratheon are, through the female line, descendants of the ancient Storm Kings.
As House Baratheon took their sigil and words from the Storm Kings, their sigil was also a black stag on a gold field, and their words were "Ours is the Fury".
Known Storm Kings
- Durran, known as Durran Godsgrief, the first Storm King and founder of Storm's End.
- Argilac, known as Argilac the Arrogant.
In the books
While in the first five novels they are referred to as just "the Storm Kings" (much as the Starks were called the "Kings of Winter"), the forthcoming sourcebook The Worlds of Ice and Firereveals that their actual name was House Durrendon.
