"You're riding to the Crag to negotiate a surrender?"
Talisa Maegyr to Robb Stark[src]

The Surrender of the Crag is an event in the War of the Five Kings. It occurs off screen between "A Man Without Honor" and "The Prince of Winterfell." The army of House Stark in the Westerlands maintains its camp after the victory at the Battle of the Yellow Fork while King Robb Stark travels to the Crag with a small force to negotiate their surrender and take on supplies.

History

Prelude

Having won victories in the Riverlands, at the Battle of Oxcross, the Sack of Ashemark and the Battle of the Yellow Fork the army of House Stark under the command of King Robb I has established a strong foothold in the Westerlands.[1][2][3] The victory at Oxcross has left the region lightly defended.[2]

Surrender

King Robb Stark leads part of his force to the Crag to negotiate the surrender of House Westerling, a proud but impoverished vassal house of House Lannister. He is accompanied by the battlefield surgeon Talisa Maegyr who uses the opportunity to obtain supplies from the castle's Maester.[3]

Aftermath

Robb returns from the mission without incident. However, while he was away his key prisoner Ser Jaime Lannister was released by his mother Catelyn Stark without his consent. The betrayal, combined with the ongoing worry about his siblings captivity, causes Robb to seek solace in the arms of Talisa Maegyr, flouting his vow to marry into House Frey.[4]

In the books

In the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, the Crag surrenders only after losing a battle for control of the castle. Robb is wounded in the battle and he is nursed back to health by Jeyne Westerling, the daughter of the Lord of the Crag. Shortly afterwards Robb learns of the apparent deaths of his brothers at the hand of Theon Greyjoy, and in his grief he sleeps with Jeyne. Having taken Jeyne's maidenhood, Robb feels honor-bound to marry her, in spite of his betrothal to a daughter of Walder Frey. The character Talisa Maegyr does not appear in the novels.
