David Benioff stated in one of his interviews together with Dan Weiss (and perhaps George too, I can't remember), that he originally would have liked the song to be in the tune of the Game of Thrones opening, meaning the intro was the Rains of Castamere all along. According to David, "luckily" Dan convinced him that this wouldn't have the same thrill and impact than the haunting The National version has.
