Yunkai, Meereen, or Astapor?[]

Okay, in the novels he was a morbidly obese slaver from Yunkai, and in Season 5 he was seen buying slaves outside Meereen to use in the gladiator pits - which sort of implied he was from Meereen and not Yunkai, but really, even in the novels there are many foreign slavers from Yunkai itself who come to the games because they hope to earn good coin on it. So nothing prevents TV-Yezzan from being a Yunkai slaver who just happened to come to Meereen.

Now in Season 6, Yezzan represents Astapor at the diplomatic meeting - and fine, economy of characters, good actor, might as well re-use him. After all, Yunkai is helping to reconstitute Astapor now. So at the least this weakens the argument that "He's automatically from Meereen" if he's also representing Astapor.

Frankly I think it's entirely reasonable that he's just a slaver who moves around between the three major cities to different markets, so he isn't really "from" one of them that much.

I asked David J. Peterson about this via Twitter, given that he handles the dialogue and unique accents for each of the three slaver-cities, yet he said he had absolutely no indications about which of the three cities Yezzan is in fact supposed to be from (even local accent wouldn't really help us; if he speeks Meereenese Low Valyrian, maybe he just picked up the local accent, after all).

Thus given that the script notes gave absolutely no indication about TV-Yezzan's origins, I move that we at the least change him back from "Meereenese" to "Yunkai"....and that we do not then change him from "Yunkai to Astapor".

That is, slap a conjecture tag on here and say "The House of zo Qaggaz is from Yunkai in the books so we assume he's still from Yunkai until stated otherwise.

Thoughts on this?

I'm at least moving "House of zo Qaggaz" out of the Meereen category.--The Dragon Demands (talk) 13:43, May 20, 2016 (UTC)
