Several prophesies about The Prince That Was Promised allude to the fact that he will have some Targaryen blood. Stannis actually fits this description, because House Baratheon intermarried with House Targaryen relatively recently. Steffon Baratheon, father of Robert, Stannis, and Renly, was the son of King Aerys II Targaryen's aunt Rhaelle, thus he was Aerys' first cousin. Robert, Stannis, and Renly are actually second cousins to [[Rhaegar Targaryen]] as well as [[Daenerys Targaryen]]. This might be moved around somewhat in the TV continuity, which removed Aerys II's father Jaehaerys II to simplify his relationship with [[Aemon Targaryen]] (Jaehaerys II had a brief rule and died young).

As it turns out, while the term "Azor Azai" is usually translated with "Prince", in the original language the word for "ruler" is gender-neutral. Thus the Prince That Was Promised could conceivably be either male or female.

According to Melisandre, Stannis Baratheon is the prophesied Prince That Was Promised, the Warrior of Light.

"The Prince That Was Promised"[1], also known as the Son of Fire and Warrior of Light,[2] is a mythic figure in the religion of the Lord of Light. According to prophecy, the Prince That Was Promised would be reborn "amidst salt and smoke"[3] and pull a flaming sword from the flames, Lightbringer, to combat the coming darkness.[4]

According to Lady Melisandre, priestess of the Lord of Light, Stannis Baratheon is the prophesied Prince.

In the books

The the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, the Prince That Was Promised is also known as Azor Ahai, a legendary warrior who rose up and defeated the Others - the books name for the White Walkers - during the Long Night, wielding a sword of fire, called Lightbringer.

Several prophesies about The Prince That Was Promised allude to the fact that he will have some Targaryen blood. Stannis actually fits this description, because House Baratheon intermarried with House Targaryen relatively recently. Steffon Baratheon, father of Robert, Stannis, and Renly, was the son of King Aerys II Targaryen's aunt Rhaelle Targaryen, thus he was Aerys' first cousin. Robert, Stannis, and Renly are actually second cousins to Rhaegar Targaryen as well as Daenerys Targaryen. This might be moved around somewhat in the TV continuity, which removed Aerys II's father Jaehaerys II to simplify his relationship with Aemon Targaryen (Jaehaerys II had a brief rule and died young).

As it turns out, while the term "Azor Azai" is usually translated with "Prince", in the original language the word for "ruler" is gender-neutral. Thus the Prince That Was Promised could conceivably be either male or female.
