Notes

  • The title is a reference to the words of the oath sworn by new recruits into the Night's Watch, which include the lines: "I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men."
  • The episode is directed by Neil Marshall, who previously directed the critically acclaimed season 2 episode "Blackwater".
  • The whole episode takes place at Castle Black and the wall.
  • The episode with most on-screen death in the series.

In the Books

  • The episode is adapted from the following chapters of A Storm of Swords:
    • Chapter 55, Jon VII: Jon finds Ygritte, shot through the chest with an arrow, and the woman he loved dies in his arms.
    • Chapter 64, Jon VIII: Jon orders fire arrows and oil casks dropped on the giants and mammoths.
    • Chapter 73, Jon X: Jon makes the decision to leave Castle Black and go north of the wall to meet with Mance Rayder.
  • In the books, Tormund Giantsbane is not captured by the Night`s Watch, but stays with Mance Rayder after the first battle of Castle Black. Its Rattleshirt that is captured after the battle.
  • There are some notable differences between the battle in the books and its portrayal in the TV-show.
    • The battle starts at the crack of dawn, instead of the dark night.
    • The assualt is driven back after the wildlings felt into a trap at the stairs, with many of them being burned alive.
    • The siege afterwards goes for several days before Jon Snow leaves to talk to Mance Rayder.
    • Mag Mar Tun Doh Weg is killed by Donald Noye in the books. The later seems to be abstinent from the the tv-series.
    • Styr dies in the battle from falling of the wall, after some segments of it collapses while he was climbing.
    • Samwell Tarly and Gilly arrived at Castle Black first after the battle was over.
    • Alliser Thorne and Janos Slynt was at Eastwatch-by-the-Sea when the siege started, holding back a division of wildlings led by Rattleshirt.
    • Jon is arrested by Janos Slynt and Alliser Thorne after they arrive with reinforcment from Eastwatch-by-the-Sea. After Rattleshirt informs that Jon deserted the watch and joined the wildlings, he is arrested and put in the cells under the wall.
    • Jon is sent to talk to Mance Rayder, with Slynt and Thorne having the intention for him to assassinate Rayder.

Memorable Quotes

Alliser Thorne - "Brothers! A hundred generation have defended this castle. She has never fallen before and she will not fall tonight. Those are Thenns on our walls, they eat the flesh of the men they kill! Do you want to fill the belly of a Thenn tonight? Tonight we fight! And when the sun rises, I promise you, Castle Black will stand! The Night's Watch will stand! With me now, now with me!"
