Timothy Van Patten (born 10 June 1959) is an award-winning American actor, scriptwriter, producer and director. He is best known for his directing work for HBO, having directed episodes of Boardwalk Empire, The Pacific, Rome, Deadwood, The Wire, The Sopranos and Sex and the City. He has also directed episodes of Ed and Touched by an Angel. Patten's most notable project was The Sopranos, for which he directed twenty episodes and won a Writer's Guild Award and an Edgar Award. Another episode he wrote won an Emmy Award for Best Writing.
Patten directed the first two episodes of Game of Thrones, including reshoots of the pilot originally directed by Thomas McCarthy. He was nominated for a Emmy Award for his work on the first episode of the series.
Van Patten did not return as a director for the second season. He did attend the 2012 Golden Globes ceremony and celebrated Peter Dinklage winning Best Supporting Actor.
