His leg is wounded in the [[Battle of Oxcross]]. As King [[Robb Stark]] surveys the aftermath of the battle, he sees him as he is being treated for an infected wound by [[Talisa Maegyr]], the battlefield healer from Volantis. Though he begs for her not too, she amputates the leg, she tells him that he will die otherwise. Having seen her difficulties with the wounded man, Robb helps to hold him down, telling him to bite down on something so as not to bite off his own tongue. Roose Bolton, one of Robb's field commanders doesn't think Robb or Talisa should be caring for an enemy soldier, but they ignore him.

The wounded man is then loaded onto a cart. Talisa tells Robb that he was only a fisherman, conscripted into the Lannister forces, and had probably never held a spear before one was thrust into his hand. Talisa berates Robb for the futility and brutality of war. She asks if Robb's belief in the rightness of his cause will help the man's foot grow back.

This army had been raised in Lannisport by Ser [[Stafford Lannister]] to reinforces Tywin Lannister's losses in the east. It was mostly made of raw untrained recruits. Ser Stafford, thinking Robb's forces far away, did not set out sufficient sentries and they were completely surprised and routed ceasing to exist as an army at all. Ser Stafford himself was killed reportedly while chasing after his own horse.
